ARTSIDA5 Auction Night

Anyone quick enough to purchase a ticket or lucky enough to be invited May 4th to the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MACM) was witness to a yearly spectacle put forth by ACCMARTSIDA, and hordes of volunteers. Generous sponsorships and charitable donations helped make this evening of music and art a reality. Live painting by Zilon, musical performance by Sarah Neufeld of Arcade Fire, and an exciting art auction helped to raise funds for ACCM, who provide support for those living with HIV/AIDS in Montréal. Thanks goes out to TDGalerie DENCADREXthomas&cieVargas RestaurantsLes Brasseurs RJ, and everyone who gave their art, talent, time and love to making this happen.

I was humbled and very thankful to be awarded the Emerging Artist Prize presented by SDC du Village and selected by ARTSIDA5′s Curatorial Committee. I am positive that Yabusame found a good home with whomever purchased it that night.

Comments are welcome, and see you all again next year!

The New Year

After a long while of being busy, I feel it is time to get back into posting and creating.

Over the holidays I had time to get lots of sleep and gained twenty pounds. Food at your parents house is richer and there are things like “pantries” and “cold rooms.” I made sure to take some things back with me when I left.

For Christmas I was asked to paint a dog for a gift. The dog’s name is Olive and it is a beagle.

While growing up we had a television. The only channel it received was CBC, so I grew up on CBC and whatever movies my parents happened to enjoy. My mom enjoyed Black & White movies and English “tea movies” as we called them. My dad preferred anything with subtitles. Foreign movies stacked his shelves, my favourite being the samurai movies. My dad’s favourite movie is directed by Akira Kurosawa and is titled Red Beard. There is a scene in this movie where the main character, a doctor, gets into a brawl with locals and dislocates someones jaw. This is my favourite part, and so I painted that for my dad.

Whats next for 2013? Something big. I’ll let you know.

Nuit Blanche Ottawa 2012

Last night was Ottawa’s first Nuit Blanche event. It was a huge succes. Nuit Blanche Ottawa 2012 saw people of all ages visiting galleries near both the ByWard Market and the Hintonburg area.

I was situated at the Hintonburg Community centre and brought some art to sell while I painted live. By the time midnight came, I had sold everything I brought with me from Montreal and was very tired from painting four 3ft x 5ft paintings (which I also sold).

I shared the space with France-Marie Trépanier, Diana Kline, and Sarah Lickley. All were highly talented and  put on a good show.

Check out the Ottawa Citizen for a great article with plenty of photos.

Fresh Paint Gallery

The Pop Up show title “FreshPaint” was held last thursday September 6th at the Fresh Paint Gallery here in Montreal.

The project was presented by the artist collective known as “Under Pressure.” Showcasing highly talented street artists alongside various other talents, the variety of styles was amazing to see. The fine people at Under Pressure  put together some of the best talent at the Fresh Paint show and made the most interesting and assorted mix of art I have seen here in Montreal yet. Check out their fight against Chevrolet.

The pop up show featured many plywood pieces with holes cut out to allow your face to fill the hole and become part of the piece. No space was wasted, with paint and sculpture on the floors, walls, windows, and ceilings for an immersive visual experience. While you wandered the two floor space, DJ Construct filled your ears with dubstep, bass, breakcore, jungle, and other audio omelettes.

I have finally gathered together some photos from the Empty Sets show at La Plante which was held August 18th on Van Horne.

Mathematically themed artwork, digital displays, and interactive games held the attention of those attending late into the night.

La Plante, the CAMBAM(Center for Applied Mathematics in Bioscience and Medicine) Student Chapter and the Eastern Bloc Lab presented an all day art show, data party, and interactive object space.

Live music  by WHITECUBE, PRIME CUTS, and GROJ didn’t hurt either.

La Plante Show – Jesse Morris Art

Come check out the creativity at the La Plante Art Show this August 18th!

La Plante, the CAMBAM(Center for Applied Mathematics in Bioscience and Medicine) Student Chapter and the Eastern Bloc Lab present an all day art show / data party / interactive object space, followed by a night of thoughtful listening, cacophonic casseroles and riotous amoeboid dancing!
—-The statement of intention:—-
In the contemporary sciences, data visualization and graphing systems play an increasingly vital role in interdisciplinary work between mathematics, life sciences, and physics. The visual results are often paradoxical, humorous, or aesthetically compelling – botched graphs, incomplete code behaving strangely, large network diagrams and so forth. While not necessarily “correct” or relevant to scientific research, these images facilitate a distinct aesthetic that opens up a unique mental space of dreaming in code, propagating arrays, quantizing qualitative experience, and extreme pattern recognition. We wish to harness this creative energy in order to comment upon the interface between science & the public // data & the brain that parses it // nature & how we quantify it!

Nuit Blanche Sur Tableau Noir Montreal 2012

Last night I participated in the Nuit Blanche Sur Tableau Noir event on rue Mont-Royal and had a great time. Plenty of foot traffic and many encouraging words. Thank you everyone involved with Nuit Blanche Sur Tableau Noir Montreal 2012.

The theme of the event was “J’aime mon voisin” and took place June 9th from 10pm-2am. Everyone had a different take on this theme.

Watch me paint HERE.
