Artist Statement
Growing up in the rural and expansive Northwestern Ontario region in Canada, I was surrounded by lush boreal forests and the rugged Canadian shield. I spent my formative years exploring the woodlands behind my parents’ house and translating these experiences how I knew best: by expressing them artistically. My early attempts to reproduce the world around me were not just limited to pen and paper, instead I would eagerly incorporate the materials I had at hand, be it a stick and a patch of mud or spilled milk on the breakfast table. Looking back, I have come to realize that I have always had a deep respect and fascination with the beauty of nature. Many of my earliest memories revolve around feeling awestruck with the visual splendor of nature while canoeing with my family in the back country. Even as a child, I remember knowing that there was so much I did not know, and I sought to understand those mysteries through my drawings. Subsequently, this fundamental curiosity for my environment has become the crucial element of my art practice.
I am a mixed media artist with a focus on illustration and scientific illustration. I was born in Fort Frances, Ontario and have been painting since 2004. My practice centers on examining the beauty, mystery, and occasional absurdity of life and my surroundings. In addition, my scientific drawing includes anatomical drawings and representations of microscopic life blended with a touch of the surreal.
